Day One of the Franco-British Young Leaders Programme began with a visit to Parliament and a talk by John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, followed by a question and answer session with Young Leaders.
The session continued at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy where they were welcomed by Baroness Tessa Blackstone and Hervé Mariton, co-chairs of the Franco-British Council.
An ice-breaker session was held with the Paris Climate Change Re-imagined where Young Leaders taking on the roles of world leaders trying to negotiate the Climate Change Agreement.
Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller, former Director-General of MI5, gave an amazing insight into her career as head of the British security service.
The Defence Attaché at the British Embassy in Paris, Brigadier Rob Thomson, spoke about his experience in Afghanistan and leadership in the military.
The first day was finished off with a fish and chip dinner, and a fireside chat with General Patrick Sanders, Commander Joint Forces Command.
La première journée du séminaire Young Leaders 2020 débuta par une visite du Parlement britannique avec une allocution du député John Bercow, Président de la Chambre des communes, suivie d’une session de questions-réponses.
Le groupe fut ensuite accueilli à l’Académie militaire royale de Sandhurst par Baroness Tessa Blackstone et Hervé Mariton, coprésidents du Conseil Franco-Britannique au Royaume-Uni et en France. Le reste de la journée à Sandhurst fut marqué par une session dans le but de briser la glace entre les participants sur le thème de « l’Accord de Paris réinventé » où les Young Leaders devaient se mettre dans la peau de leaders mondiaux pour tenter de renégocier l’accord sur le changement climatique.
L’ancienne Directrice générale du MI5, Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller, rejoint le groupe dans l’après-midi pour donner un aperçu de sa carrière à la tête des services de sécurité britanniques. Un échange jugé passionnant par les participants.
L’attaché de défense de l’Ambassade britannique à Paris, brigadier Rob Thomson, vint également partager son expérience en Afghanistan et dans l’armée.
La première journée se clôtura par un dîner dans un pub traditionnel britannique ainsi que par un échange informel avec le Général Patrick Sanders, Commandant du Commandement des forces interarmées.
